Thickness of Laminate Flooring

Thickness of Laminate

After choosing the finish of your laminate flooring, you will also need to decide what level of thickness that you want. Although you might not realize it, laminate floor thickness has very little to do with the durability of the flooring. Instead, the thickness of your flooring will directly correlate to three different factors: Consistency of your flooring, ease of installation and overall cost. The thicker the laminate the more expensive it is. Price ranges from $0.6 for 6mm and to $2.5 /sq.ft for 8mm, 10mm will be $3.25 to $3.5, the final cost will be determined by the manufacturer and finish/pattern of the laminate. Laminate flooring comes in four separate thickness levels, all of which deserve closer examination before making a choice:

  • 6 Millimeter: This is the lowest thickness layer available. Can be slightly difficult to install, but is much less expensive than other levels of thickness. Price range $0.6-$0.99.
  • 8 Millimeter: The most common thickness type in laminate flooring. Moderately priced and fairly easy to install. Price range $2.5-$2.7.
  • 10 Millimeter: Slightly more expensive than 6 and 8-millimeter thickness laminate flooring, but much easier to install and resists warping better than the lower thickness levels. Price range $3.25 to $3.5.
  • 12 Millimeter: While this is the most expensive laminate thickness you could select, it offers you the most benefits. Firstly, 12-millimeter laminate flooring is extremely easy to levelly install, saving additional future costs. Secondly, this level of thickness offers a performance experience much closer to wood than any other type. Finally, this thickness is usually more impact resistant than lower level laminate flooring. $3.5 to $4.1.
