2 Types of Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is becoming wildly popular across the board these days. It’s inexpensive, looks fantastic and can hold up to even the harshest use. It’s also very easy to clean and maintain—just sweep or mop. We live in a society where everyone is on the go all the time and busy schedules just don’t allow for the kind of work that is required to maintain things like traditional hardwood floors, as great as they look. The good news is that there’s a laminate flooring option for just about any need or style you want to present. Learn the different types of laminate flooring and how a professional flooring contractor from ServiceWhale can help you find the best options for your home.

Types of Laminate Flooring

There is a broad variety of different types of laminate flooring. “Laminate” refers to the process by which a number of different types of materials are fused together and sealed. This means that laminate flooring comes in a range of materials as well as looks. There is wood laminate, stone, tile and more. Just about any style can be presented in a form that’s very easy to assemble, lay and maintain.

Generally, when we talk about “types” of laminate flooring, we’re not discussing materials, but construction. The two basic types are High Pressure and Direct Pressure but you’ll also take into account thickness, locking systems and styles.

High Pressure Construction (HPL)

High pressure, or HPL, laminate construction is a process by which multiple planks are fused together using a strong glue, then combined with other materials before being again fused and glued into a single plank. This creates a very hard and durable finish that can withstand a lot of punishment.

Direct Pressure Construction (DPL)

In direct pressure, or DPL construction, the laminate is created by all materials being fused together at one time. These materials, while still strong, aren’t as tough as HPL planks but are much less expensive to purchase and install and are still a strong means of laying floor in your home.

Thickness and Locking

There are many different forms of installation and thickness that you’ll want to consider when installing your laminate system. Flooring comes anywhere from about 7mm to a full 12mm thickness. Thicker planks, obviously, cost more but are more durable and are a good option if the subfloor beneath isn’t 100% level.

The different kinds of locking mechanisms include:

• Mechanical (reinforced)
• Glueless Tongue & Groove
• Pre-Glued Snap Systems

Styles

The sky really is the limit when it comes to laminate flooring. Do you want a natural stone look? It’s out there! Hardwood is exceptionally popular. So are different types of tile look. In the end, you’ll work with your ServiceWhale flooring contractor to determine the best option for you and the room you’re renovating.
