Grout Types for Ceramic Tile

Choosing the Right Grout for Ceramic Tile - Cost guide ceramic flooring

Ceramic Tile Grout Types

Of almost equal consideration to what type of ceramic tile you will use in your flooring project is the type of grout that you will use. Grout is a bonding substance that will be used to seal the gaps between your tiles, adding an extra layer of cohesiveness and moisture protection. The cost of Grout is included in the installation costs estimated in this cost guide. Generally speaking, the type of grout you use will be determined by the distance between your tiles, with the most common forms of grout being:

  • Portland Cement Based: While not a form of grout in and of itself, Portland cement is one of the most common binding agents in grout. Portland cement comes in a variety of styles that can be matched to the particular needs of your grouting job.
  • Epoxy Based: If you’re tiling in an area that is highly vulnerable to staining, such as a countertop, then an epoxy based grout is the right choice. Made of an epoxy resin, this grout provides one of the tightest seals possible and is highly moisture resistant.
  • Sanded: Sanded grout should be used for tiling with a much larger gap between the tiling, usually between 1/8” and 3/8”. Very grainy in texture.
  • Unsanded: Unsanded grout is usually employed for tiling where the gaps are very small, less than 1/8”. Mostly used for wall tiling.
  • Sealing Grout: Sealing grout is one of the most water resistant grout types available. Because of this, it is usually used in showers and bathtubs.
