What does SEER stand for?
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio and is used to measure the overall efficiency of an air conditioning system.
- Choosing a higher efficiency will increase the cost of your project, but will save you more on energy bills and may qualify you for a tax credit or a utility company rebate.
- Choosing a lower efficiency will reduce the cost of your project, but will save you less on energy bills.
- We recommend High efficiency (14.5 to 16 SEER), since in our opinion it provides a good trade-off between costs and savings, but the decision is yours.
- The following estimates* for an average U.S. home may also help you decide:
Cooling efficiency | Savings on electric power | Lifetime savings |
Regular: 13 to 14 SEER | – | – |
High: 14.5 to 16 SEER | 13% | $495 |
Top: 16.5 to 18 SEER | 24% | $885 |
Top+: 18.5 to 21 SEER | 35% | $1,305 |
Top++: 21.5 to 24 SEER | 43% | $1,620 |
