Warning Signs of Water Heater Failure
When your water heater fails, it can come seemingly out of the blue. One day everything seems fine and the next, your basement is flooded by a torrent of water pouring out of the bottom of your old reliable. That’s why it’s important to watch out for the signs of impending fail to make sure that you avoid the emergency and doom that comes with a burst heater. Here are four signs of water heater failure in your PA home, and how Service Whale can get the problem right again.
Aged Heater
You really must stay on top of the age of your water heater. They are not built to last forever, and replacing yours before it gets too old can keep you from the mess of catastrophic failure. If you’re not sure how old the heater is, check the serial number sticker, which should have the manufacturer’s date. If you’re not sure how to find or read the date, a Service Whale contractor can help with that.
If your heater is more than 10 years old, it’s past time for it to be replaced.
Rust in the Water
Have you noticed the water from your hot water tap is brown or rust-colored? This could be due to you water heater rusting out. It could also be from rusty pipes. To check, call a Service Whale representative or drain a couple of buckets from your heater to check for the problem. If there’s rust in the water heater, it needs to be swapped out.
Noise and Water Heater Failure
If you’ve noticed that your water heater is rumbling or making noise, it could be because you have built up a layer of hard sediment in the heater which is making it function less efficiently and is nearing the end of its life. Sediment tends to naturally build up over time—there’s not much you can do about it. But if your PA home is full of noise from a banging heater, it’s time to have it replaced by a Service Whale contractor.
Water Pooling around the Heater
Of course, the most obvious sign of a failing water heater is that it’s leaking! The presence of moisture, puddles or (goodness forbid!) pools of water around or under the water heater is a sure sign that it could go at any time.
A failing water heater can cause all manner of problems—replacing it early doesn’t cost any more than waiting for it to fail, and if you wait for failure, it could mean extra costs such as those accrued from fixing water damage to your basement. Your water heater holds gallons of waters that can create a lot of problems if they let loose.
